Fernand Pierre

Biography

Fernand Pierre was born near Port-au-Prince and began as a woodcarver before turning to painting in the 1940s. A founding member of Haiti's 'naïve school,' he joined the famed Centre d'Art and became known for his luminous jungle tableaux, angelic figures, and paradisiacal birds. Pierre's paintings pulse with spirituality-lush greens and radiant blues populated by symbolic flora and fauna that evoke Edenic harmony. His imagery merges Haitian Catholic iconography with Vodou cosmology: saints coexist with lwa, paradise with the Haitian countryside. Throughout the 1950s and '60s, his works were shown internationally, helping establish Haitian naïf painting as a distinct Caribbean movement. His passing in 2002 marked the end of an era—the close of Haiti's golden generation of primitive modernists who painted faith into foliage.
