Biography

Jean-Pierre Basilic Dantor Franck Étienne d'Argent-universally known as Frankétienne-was Haiti's towering polymath: novelist, playwright, poet, musician, and painter. Born in 1936 in Ravine Sèche, he co-founded the Spiralisme movement, arguing that creativity must mirror Haiti's chaotic, polyphonic soul. On canvas, his 'spiralism' became a vortex of colour-explosive swirls of reds, violets, and ochres that embody motion, turmoil, and rebirth. Each painting seems to vibrate with the same restless energy that animates his literature. His oeuvre fuses language and pigment, text and gesture, revealing Haiti's contradictions and resilience. Frankétienne was celebrated worldwide, receiving UNESCO honours and honorary doctorates for his cultural impact. He died on February 20, 2025, leaving behind a universe of words and colour-proof that art can be both rebellion and revelation.
