Biography

Henri-Robert Brésil was born in Gonaïves and rose from self-taught beginnings to become one of Haiti's most internationally collected artists. His celebrated 'bird-forest' paintings-dense tropical canopies teeming with parrots and herons-are triumphs of repetition and colour balance. Brésil's style evolved from the naïve to the near-abstract: forests dissolve into pointillist mosaics, foliage into hypnotic geometry. Exhibited from New York to Tokyo, his work became synonymous with Haiti's environmental spirit. Beneath their beauty lies subtle commentary on fragility—the paradise Haiti risks losing. He died in 1999, leaving a legacy of verdant enchantment that continues to captivate collectors and ecologists alike.
