Joseph Casimir

Biography

Born March 3, 1941, in Port-au-Prince, Joseph Casimir was a painter of extraordinary discipline and detail, regarded as one of Haiti's great miniaturists. He trained at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1961, mastering classical technique before turning toward subjects that celebrated Haitian daily life and history. After emigrating to the United States, he continued to paint and exhibit, earning recognition from both Haitian and international art circles. Casimir passed away on April 8, 2021, in Boston, remembered as an artist who distilled the vastness of Haitian experience into the intimacy of miniature-proving that the small can carry the weight of history.
