Levoy Exil

Biography

Levoy Exil was born in 1944 (variously cited as October 19 or December 7) in Soisson-la-Montagne (or Fermathe) above Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He became one of the foremost members of the Saint Soleil art movement, which began in the 1970s and drew on rural Haitian spirituality, Vodou imagery, and dreamlike abstraction. Exil's style is characterised by mystical, abstract compositions that depict Vodou loas (spirits), celestial suns and stars, birds, and marassas (twins) - often using a pointillist-like technique of many dots, and vivid, rhythmic line work. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in collections outside Haiti.
