Born August 28, 1944, in St. Marc, Haiti, Emilcar Similien-known simply as Simil-was one of the most polished stylists of modern Haitian art. He studied painting, sculpture, and art history at the Académie des Beaux-Arts from 1965 to 1971 and developed a distinct figurative style marked by sleek contours, serene female portraits, and sumptuous colour contrasts. Simil's women are iconic: poised, dignified, adorned in gold jewelry and painted in rich tones of brown, black, and ochre. His canvases radiate introspection and sensual quiet. His meticulous finish and luminous palette placed him in the lineage of Bernard Sèjourné and Jean-René Jérôme, artists who emphasized beauty and psychological presence over folklore. Simil's works have been exhibited in the Caribbean, Europe, and the United States. He passed away in 2006, leaving behind a legacy of refinement and an enduring influence on Haitian portraiture.
