Le Lion et l'Ours Blanc by Jasmin Joseph, oil on canvas

Le Lion et l'Ours Blanc

Jasmin Joseph

In Le Lion et l'Ours Blanc, Jasmin Joseph imagines a surreal meeting between two symbolic creatures - lion and polar bear - set against a dreamlike Eden. Beneath a tree of red fruit, monkeys observe as the animals engage in quiet negotiation. Joseph, revered for his allegorical storytelling, transforms this tableau into a fable of coexistence and difference. His animal figures possess distinctly human gestures, expressing curiosity and reason. Painted in soft, natural hues, the composition glows with pastoral calm, even as its meaning invites interpretation. Le Lion et l'Ours Blanc embodies Joseph's genius for merging myth, morality, and humor into an unforgettable Haitian visual parable.

About the Artist

Jasmin Joseph

A sculptor turned painter, Jasmin Joseph was born in Grande-Rivière-du-Nord and trained briefly at the Centre d'Art before developing his own rustic narrative style. His canvases are populated by animals, villagers, and allegories of rural life, rendered with humour and gentle irony. Joseph's work feels folkloric yet moral: donkeys gossip, roosters boast, peasants labour beneath storybook skies. He preserved Haiti's oral traditions in colour, transforming fables into visual parables. Internationally exhibited in the 1960s and 1970s, he became one of Haiti's best-known 'naïve realists.' He died in 2005, having turned everyday simplicity into enduring myth.
