Le Village by Préfète Duffaut, oil on canvas

Le Village

Préfète Duffaut

In this monumental canvas, Duffaut expands his celestial cartography into a breathtaking panorama. A network of arched bridges connects luminous neighborhoods cascading down verdant hills toward the sea. The repetition of curved pathways suggests eternity—a visual prayer spiraling upward. Painted in radiant acrylics, Duffaut's palette vibrates with optimism: turquoise, coral, ochre, and amethyst dance in radiant harmony. His cityscapes, both utopian and personal, mirror the artist's deep spiritual conviction that order, faith, and imagination can rebuild the world. 'Le Village' captures Duffaut's unique synthesis of precision and mysticism, turning architecture into a map of the soul—a dream of communion between humanity and the divine.

About the Artist

Préfète Duffaut

Born in Jacmel, Préfète Duffaut began as a boatbuilder before discovering painting through the Centre d'Art in 1946. He created the now-legendary villes imaginaires-spiralling dream-cities rising from coastal mountains, crisscrossed with bridges and tiny pilgrims. His visionary landscapes suggest both biblical Jerusalem and Jacmel reborn, symbols of ascent and redemption. Duffaut also painted murals for the Cathedral of Sainte-Trinité in Port-au-Prince, destroyed in the 2010 earthquake. He died in 2012, revered as Haiti's city-builder of the imagination
