Les Bananiers by Gesner Armand, oil on canvas

Les Bananiers

Gesner Armand

Set against lush banana groves, a circle of pigeons rests on vibrant green earth, their feathers rendered in jewel-like tones of blue, rose, and emerald. Armand's palette glows with the clarity of tropical light, yet his composition feels meditative—a gathering of colour and calm. His signature theme of birds symbolizes peace and continuity, echoing his lifelong devotion to the beauty of Haitian nature. A former member of the Saint-Soleil movement, Armand blends mystical energy with classical control, painting not just birds but the serenity of coexistence itself.

About the Artist

Gesner Armand

Born in Croix-des-Bouquets, Gesner Armand trained at the Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince and continued his studies in Paris. A poet-painter at heart, he balanced European technique with Haitian lyricism. His canvases blossom with flowers, birds, angels, musicians, and carnival processions rendered in radiant blues and oranges. Armand's brush sings: petals become rhythm, angels become dancers, color becomes chorus. He was also curator of the Musée d'Art Haïtien, where he championed fellow Haitian artists and preserved the country's artistic patrimony. Through his long career, Armand captured Haiti's inner music—a visual symphony of devotion and delight. He died in 2008.
